Description from Architect

Southmoor Elementary school was a challenging site due to the existing steep grades that sloped towards the school building. The agricultural theme for the site infl uenced the grading and overall site layout by terracing the play equipment areas and the central gathering area down the slope with walkways winding through and connecting the spaces. The age-separated play areas are centrally located around the custom shade shelter and the outdoor boulder amphitheater. An informal boulder seating area has vegetable images sandblasted on the boulders. Colorful play pad striping highlights moon phases, agricultural crops and garden cultivation. All text is labeled bilingually. The oversized shade shelter columns will be painted as a future mural art project with the theme of plant -cultivate-harvest-fallow.

Additional site improvements include a new sodded and irrigated playfi eld with backstop, a crusher fi nes running track and a newly paved parking lot with a drop-off drive. The school “Greening” committee worked closely with the design team and donated site furnishings and brick pavers through fundraising efforts.
